Pair of carved alabaster vases, ovoid body, cylindrical neck - Lot 372
Pair of carved alabaster vases, ovoid body, cylindrical neck edged with doucine moldings. French work circa 1770-1780. H.: 24 cm (traces of attachment of a bronze mounting and recorking, chips). Our vases are part of the neoclassical movement that emerged in reaction to the excesses of the rocaille style, and under the impetus of a cenacle of taste-setting amateurs such as the engraver Nicolas Cochin and the architect Soufflot. The return to Antiquity is evident in the use of alabaster, as well as in the mounting of our vases, now absent, which was inspired by the Greek style in vogue at the time.
