Large double-handled Roman vase with lid - Lot 369
Large double-handled Roman vase with lid This important Egyptian alabaster vase, probably a cinerary urn, features a flat-shouldered body topped by a rimmed lip. On either side of the body are two elegant split handles, the ends of which take the form of swan or duck heads. The ensemble rests on a pedestal-shaped base and is closed by a lid topped by an oblong handle. This is a fine example produced during a relatively short period, the early imperial period, and in very few workshops, probably Egyptian as the use of alabaster would suggest. Roman art, 1st century A.D. Banded alabaster Height: 40 cm CASSURES Provenance: Former collection of Alexandre Nicolaï (1864-1952), lawyer at the Bordeaux bar Passed on by descent Former French private collection, acquired from descendants before the 1990s. Presence of restorations characteristic of the Grand Tour of the late XIXth century
