Cabinet in marquetry of teak, ebony, exotic woods, ivory and - Lot 270
Cabinet in marquetry of teak, ebony, exotic woods, ivory and "sadeli" micro-mosaic, decorated with repeated geometric motifs, rosettes or foliage in circles. Indo-Portuguese work, probably Thane (today Mumbai). Late 16th century. Dimensions: 43 x 88.35 x 42.6cm (modern base, minor restorations). Our cabinet is a perfect example of the technical perfection of Indian "sadeli" marquetry, inherited from Shiraz in Persia via Sindh and Bombay. These luxurious cabinets were designed to hold precious personal effects, and were marketed in particular via the counters of Goa
