Adrien LEPRIEUR (Paris 1671-1732) - Lot 223
Adrien LEPRIEUR (Paris 1671-1732) Presumed portrait of Marie Chardon des Roys (1677-?), née Ligier de la Prade Oil on canvas (original canvas) 81 x 65 cm Signed and dated on the back: 1715 or 1725 Presented in a fine carved limewood frame Provenance: - Considered by a long family tradition to be a portrait of a member of the Chardon des Roys family - Vassy-Jalenques sale, Clermont-Ferrand, July 24, 2014, lot 378, presented alongside three other portraits of members of the same family Our portrait adds to our knowledge of the career of Leprieur, Hyacinthe Rigaud's friend and right-hand man for 14 years. In addition to its obvious quality, this elegant effigy is interesting in that it adopts, almost to the letter, a posture invented by Hyacinthe Rigaud as early as 1696 for his portrait of the Marquise de Sourches (private collection, Château de Parentignat, Puy de Dôme). Our model is depicted in a half-body position, without hands, wearing a short "jug" wig with a long curl at one shoulder. Her silver brocade gown, with its wide throat and rolled-up sleeves embellished with pearls, was complemented by a wide braided scarf with blue silk highlights. Marie Ligier de la Prade, born into a family of Clermont-Ferrand doctors, married Claude Chardon des Roys in Clermont-Ferrand in 1705. He was Keeper of the Seals in the Auvergne Seneschal and Presidial Seat of Riom, then Treasurer of France in the Finance Office of the Generalitat of Riom. We would like to thank Mr. Stephan Perreau for his information on Adrien Leprieur and on our portrait, made available on his website dedicated to Hyacinthe Rigaud, which contributed to the writing of this notice.
