Reference: endowed with a definite artistic talent, Princess Marie was a pupil of Ary Scheffer and David d'Angers. As a sculptor and draftswoman, she left several versions of this famous Joan of Arc, most of which are on display at the Dordrecht Museum in the Netherlands and in several private collections.
The original marble statue, executed in 1837, was commissioned by King Louis-Philippe on December 30, 1836 for the historical galleries of Versailles, and was created by Auguste Trouchaud after the model of Marie d'Orléans.
The princess had begun her work on September 23, 1835. From the marble version, several models were subsequently produced, in cookie in 1844, then in bronze of various sizes, notably by Maison Susse Frères in Paris, regularly during the second half of the 19th century. It was widely admired when it was inaugurated in Versailles on June 10, 1837, to mark the wedding of her brother, the Duc d'Orléans.
History: The Prince de Joinville, the artist's uncle, noted in his Mémoires published in 1886, entitled Vieux souvenirs: "I remember one morning our sorrow at finding that Joan of Arc, which Marie was making for Versailles and which was in wax, had softened in an overheated calorifier and sagged along the frame....with the help of a lower temperature and a jack, placed in a certain way that Scheffer and I maneuvered, Jeanne d'Arc climbed back onto her arch and all was soon repaired".
