TABLE SERVICE OF KING LOUIS XV (1710-1774) FOR HIS PRIVATE C - Lot 108
TABLE SERVICE OF KING LOUIS XV (1710-1774) FOR HIS PRIVATE CABINET AT THE CHÂTEAU DE VERSAILLES. CHINA PORCELAIN PLATE. Qianlong period, circa 1738-1740. With imari decoration, decorated on the rim with eight stylized motifs representing fruits and vegetables (lemons (Buddha's hand), pomegranates and pumpkins) alternating with cartouches decorated with polychrome fans and lotus flowers enhanced with gold, Surmounted by a gold frieze on an orange background, in the center appear the great arms of France, azure with three golden fleurs-de-lis surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Order of Saint Michael under a royal crown. The reverse of the plate is decorated with four leafy flowers. Restorations, as is. Diameter: 28 cm. Provenance: Commissioned by Louis XV in 1738 through the French East India Company, this service was probably intended for the new winter dining room fitted out in 1735 on the second floor of the king's cabinets at the Château de Versailles. This service was used until the delivery of the Vincennes porcelain celestial bottom service. History: Three orders were placed by the King, the first in 1722, a second which we know included twelve bidets with the coat of arms of France, and a third in 1738 which included a complete service, but whose exact number and composition are unknown. Reference: several dishes with similar decoration are preserved in French public collections, including three at the Château de Versailles (V.2018.23, V.2019.1, V.2019.2) and one at the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes in Lorient (Inv. 2012.16.1).
