CORRESPONDENCE OF CHARLOTTE MELANIE DE CARVOISIN D'ACHY DUCH - Lot 79
CORRESPONDENCE OF CHARLOTTE MELANIE DE CARVOISIN D'ACHY DUCHESSE DE CLERMONT-TONNERRE (1791-1874). Set of 340 L.A.S., dated and addressed to her son Gaspard Louis Aimé 6th duc de Clermont-Tonnerre (1812- 1889) between 1847 and 1873. They deal with family, patrimonial and political issues. Most were written from the Château de Glisolles. Extract from a letter dated May 14, 1849 in Glisolles: "My dear child, although we have no news from you, I cannot leave you without giving you some of ours. Gaspard is better, he was able to sleep last night almost lying down, but he is still experiencing discomfort in his breathing. He's had the chourel consultation on what to do at the moment, and as soon as he's well he'll go for a very serious consultation. I'll go to Abbeville as soon as Gaspard's back to normal, as this breeze will pass and we'll have to look to the future. Jules is always happy with his homeopath. Even so, he's in a period of recrudescence brought on by the remedies. He is announcing it for the end of the month if the good weather sets in. Mr. de? arrived yesterday after his vote was cast in Paris, and the elections were, to our delight, wonderfully calm. Adieu my child, news from Roger, news from Mélanie, from you, from your good parents." History: the Duchess married Aimé Marie Gaspard 5th Duke of Clermont-Tonnerre on May 8, 1811 in Glisolles. The duke took part in Napoleon's campaigns before entering the service of King Louis XVIII in 1814. He became peer de France in 1815, then successively Minister of the Navy and Colonies from 1821 to 1824, and Minister of War from 1824 to 1828.
