REDOUTÉ Pierre-Joseph. - Lot 63
REDOUTÉ Pierre-Joseph. Reunion of 44 botanical plates, depicting flowers in the park of Malmaison and the park of the Château de Navarre (Eure) in 1812. 44 original prints (36 x 56 cm), 1812-1813. Thirty-five plates drawn by the famous Pierre-Joseph Redouté and nine by Pancrace Bessa, then engraved and printed in color (sometimes slightly enhanced). These superb plates were commissioned for Empress Joséphine by the botanist Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858), intendant general of the Malmaison estates. They are taken from the first edition of Description des plantes rares cultivées à Navarre et à Malmaison, published in Paris by the printer Pierre Didot in 1813. The complete work includes 64 plates with printed explanatory text. A good copy. Spotting to some plates. The descriptive text of some of the plates and a few of the publisher's paper folders, used as covers, are enclosed. Text leaves slightly faded and traces of use to folders.
