A GIFT FROM EMPEROR NAPOLEON III (1808-1873). - Lot 56
A GIFT FROM EMPEROR NAPOLEON III (1808-1873). NORVIS M. de, Histoire de Napoléon, published by Furne & Cie. Cie, Paris, 1855, 567 p, gilt on edges, large in-8°, contemporary binding in black morocco, decorated in the center of the first plate with the large arms of the Imperial Household and the inscription in gold lettering "Donné par l'empereur" (Given by the Emperor) in a frame of gilt fillets, spine ribbed with the Emperor's monogram under an imperial crown, title in gold lettering. Profusely illustrated with woodcuts and drawings by Raffet, many of them out-of-text. Freckles, spine damaged, as is. This is one of the most beautiful and important books written about Napoleon I by one of his contemporaries. Copies donated by Emperor Napoleon III were generally bound by Depierre. Although this binding is unsigned, it is most probably by Depierre.
