A GIFT FROM EMPEROR NAPOLEON III (1808-1873). LEON GAMBETTA LIBRARY. NORVIS M. de, Histoire de Napoléon, published by Furne & Cie. Cie, Paris, 1855, 567 p, gilt on edges, large in-8°, contemporary binding in black morocco, decorated in the center of the first plate with the large arms of the Imperial House and the inscription in gold letters "Donné par l'empereur" in a frame of gilt fillets, spine ribbed with the monogram of the emperor under an imperial crown, title in gold letters. Profusely illustrated with woodcuts and drawings by Raffet, many of them out-of-text. Bears the bookplate of Léon Gambetta (1838-1882). Freckles, spine damaged, as is This is one of the most beautiful and important books written about Napoleon I by one of his contemporaries. Copies donated by Emperor Napoleon III were generally bound by Depierre. Although this binding is unsigned, it is most probably by Depierre.
