ATTRIBUÉ A LUIGI AVOLIO (XXe SIÈCLE) - Lot 391
ATTRIBUÉ A LUIGI AVOLIO (XXe SIÈCLE) River gods Naples, first half of the 20th century Silver and gilt bronze H. 28 cm, L. 22 cm H. 26 cm, W. 22 cm Luigi Avolio was a master founder and chiseller whose masterpieces mainly depict the "Allegory of the Waters". Our model, treated in the antique manner, depicts two seated men pouring water, resting on a chased and gilded bronze scrolled terrace on four silver feet. He undoubtedly belonged to the same family clan as Eugenio Avolio (1876-1929), also a founder with a similar iconographic repertoire. These two sculptures of river gods are inspired by the work of 17th-century Italian sculptors such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and Antoine Coysevox (1640- 1720), whose personifications of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers adorn the parterre d'eau in the gardens of the Château de Versailles.
