Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789) d'après View of the ports of France: View of the port of Dieppe; View of the city and port of Bordeaux; The port of Rochefort; The port of Sète in Languedoc Suite of four engravings in Louis XVI-style frames Louis XVI style Height 78 cm - Width 98 cm In 1753, the Marquis de Marigny proposed to Louis XV that Joseph Vernet create a series of paintings illustrating the different ports of France and glorifying their riches. Vernet was commissioned to produce 24 paintings, each paying 6,000 livres. For each painting, Vernet was given precise specifications; he was asked to depict the specific activities of the region in the foreground. Between 1753 and 1765, Joseph Vernet traveled to ten ports: Marseille, Bandol, Toulon, Antibes, Sète, Bordeaux, Bayonne, La Rochelle Rochelle, Rochefort and Dieppe. From 1758 onwards, they were distributed through a series of prints engraved by Charles-Nicolas Cochin and Jacques-Philippe Le Bas; these were a great success and were withdrawn several times. He produced a total of fifteen paintings, the commission remaining unfinished.
