Egyptian statuette of Harpocrates seated. - Lot 300
Egyptian statuette of Harpocrates seated. Harpocrates is the name given to the god Horus in his infancy. His youth is symbolized by his nudity and his "child's wick". He wears the uraeus, an attribute of the Pharaoh's headdress. The seated position of our statuette, with hands close to the body, is similar to those in the Saint Louis Art Museum (55:1922) and the Brooklyn Museum (37.559E). More traditionally, Harpocrates is depicted walking, with his index finger placed in front of his mouth (see the one in the Metropolitan Museum, 45.4.2). Brown patina, traces of oxidation, restoration to the wick. An antique bronze globular flask, with a few traces of oxidation.
