École Chinoise du XVIIIe siècle - Lot 227
École Chinoise du XVIIIe siècle View of a counter in Macao Oil on canvas Height : 28 cm - Width : 38 cm (cracks, stains) Views of Western trading posts in Asia at the end of the 18th century and the dawn of the 19th century were particularly prized by European merchants. Belonging to the so-called "Anglo-Chinese" school, and the "China Trade Paintings" style, these productions capture the unique fusion between Chinese artistic traditions and Western influences. Chinese and Western artists, working together in specialized workshops, jointly produced these works in large numbers, respecting traditional Chinese techniques while incorporating Western elements such as perspective and the use of light and shadow, combined with the European technique of oil on canvas, a particularly original medium for the time. In this way, the lake views of the five ports then open to trade with the West, the most important of which were Macao and Canton, became both exotic and popular subjects, and veritable invitations to travel for those who owned them.
