Bookcase staircase in solid molded mahogany, polished iron a - Lot 47
Bookcase staircase in solid molded mahogany, polished iron and gilt bronze, with two velvet-covered side railings and seven steps topped by a platform with balustrade, gilt bronze ornamentation with stylized flowers and foliage, with the letter A, the iron reinforcing frame decorated with gilt bronze discs, resting on a plinth decorated with scrolls; (small missing parts). MISSING BRONZE ELEMENT Empire period. H : 235 cm, W : 150 cm, D : 65 cm PROVENANCE : Probably François Borghese (1776-1839), Prince Aldobrandini, his daughter Marie-Louise Borghese (1812-1838), his son, Henri de Rochechouart de Mortemart (1806-1885), then by descent, A very plausible hypothesis is that it was commissioned in the early 19th century by Prince François Aldobrandini, which explains the presence of the capital A within a wreath of laurel leaves on the uprights of this library ladder. As this type of furniture remains extremely rare, it is worth mentioning the much simpler mahogany library ladder sold at Artcurial, Paris, on July 23, 2020, lot 191. Another ladder, also much less elaborate and fitted with a handrail and balustrade, was sold in Paris on June 17, 1986 (illustrated in N. de Reyniès, Mobilier domestique, Paris, 1992, p. 781).
