Balloon flight, France, circa 1900 Painted and varnished bone fan commemorating the aerostatic exploits of the 18th century and the first flights of balloons and hot-air balloons in France. In the center, a vast panorama encompasses a view of Paris and the Pont-Neuf with the Samaritaine fountain, Place Dauphine Dauphine, and in the background the towers of the Conciergerie and the dome of the Invalides. Onlookers gather to watch Charles and Robert's balloon fly by. On the reverse, the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon, which had risen in the courtyard of the Château de Versailles before the eyes of King Louis XVI, the Pantins windmills and a view of Paris, with the Invalides dome dominating the horizon. On the plumes, portraits of Pilatre de Rozier, a Montgolfier brother and several balloons. H.19 cm (ribbon to be replaced, wear, restorations)
