Princess Mathilde, Begonias, France, circa 1897 Large folded fan, the paper sheet painted with pink begonias. Signed and dated on the right "Mathilde 1897 le 2 juin". Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (1820-1904), niece of Napoleon I and cousin of Emperor Napoleon III, is best known for her passion for fan painting. Bearing her number on the plume and on the reverse, this fan is an object that belonged personally to the princess. Skin reverse painted with a double "M" under an imperial crown. Brown tortoiseshell frame. Parisian fan house "Buissot" branded on the reverse. The plume adorned with the number "M", for Mathilde, in gold and diamonds under an imperial crown. Bélière. H.t. 32.7 cm-H.f. 20 cm (wear, restorations, stains) N.B.: the Château de Compiègne preserves another personal fan, for which she executed the leaf, and which is adorned with an identical figure.
