Adrien Rodien and Gustave Lasellaz, The Sun King at Versailles, Paris, circa 1890-1900 Folded fan, the skin sheet mounted in the English style and painted with gouache. Signed lower G. Lasellaz for the French painter Gustave Lasellaz. Taken in the gardens of the Château de Versailles, in front of the Bassin d'Apollon, this view embraces the perspective of the "green carpet" towards the Hall of Mirrors in the background. In the foreground, all the great personalities of the arts and government of the Sun King's reign are represented. From left to right, the poet La Fontaine with Madame de La Sablière, then the Princess Palatine and her children, the King's brother Monsieur, the poet Regnard, and Madame de Sévigné with her daughter Madame de Grignan. In the center, Racine, Boileau, La Bruyère, then the sculptors Coysevox in conversation with Girardon, behind the architect Mansart and Le Nôtre presented to the King by the painter Le Brun. Surrounding Louis XIV, the Dauphin, Colbert and Madame de Montespan. On the right, Bossuet, Cardinal de Coislin, Madame de Maintenon, Catinat and Vauban. The reverse is painted with foliage. White mother-of-pearl mount, cut, pierced, engraved and gilded. Flower rim. Bélière. The rear plume is engraved with the fan-maker's name "A. Rodien/ Paris". H.t. 33 cm-H.f. 19.7 cm (wear, restoration, FRAGILE RIVER) This fan can be presented in a shaped frame, with a cartel on the inside designating the various protagonists represented.
