Jocko or the Brazilian Monkey, France, circa 1825 A rare "palmettes" fan, small enough for a child. The alternating green and pink cardboard strands are decorated with a peacock feather at the top. In the center, a monkey holds a small child waving with his hat. This representation refers to the play "Jocko, ou le singe du Brésil" by Édouard Rochefort (1790-1871) and Gabriel de Lurieu (1792-1869), performed at the Porte Saint-Martin theater in 1825. The monkey was played by the acrobatic actor Mazurier. Dumb reverse, in pink paper. Wooden frame with gilded decoration on the plume. H.t. 13 cm-H.f. 9 cm (wear) Read: H.
