The Snake and the Indians, Europe, circa 1820-1830 Folded fan, the paper sheet engraved and enhanced with gouache. On an island, an Indian is attacked by an imposing snake, which another Indian tries to kill. The reverse is painted with three bouquets of golden flowers. Mounted in cut horn inlaid with steel flakes. The gilded brass plumes are decorated in relief with scrolls. H.t.19 cm-H.f. 11 cm (wear) N.B.: The theme of American Indians became popular in the wake of Marmontel's novel "Les Incas" (1777), and Chateaubriand's "Atala" (1801).
