Marat and Lepeletier, France, circa 1790-1793 Revolutionary folded fan, the double sheet in engraved paper enhanced with gouache. In the center, the portrait of Marat, l'Ami du Peuple, faces that of Lepeletier de Saint-Fargeau. These two members of the French National Convention were assassinated in 1793. In the center, a lictor beam unites Abundance and Fame. It is surmounted by a Phrygian cap in a laurel wreath. The tables of human rights are illustrated on the right, with 17 articles mentioned. Verses at the top glorify the revolutionary struggle: "Death or liberty is our common motto". Mute reverse. Wooden frame. Height 27.2 cm-H.f. 13.2 cm (accidents, restorations)
