Honneur au maréchal de France, circa 1780 - Lot 92
Honneur au maréchal de France, circa 1780 Folded fan, the cream silk sheet painted with small maritime views in medallions, in a rich decor of palms, dolphins, oars and trident, enhanced with colored sequins and gold chain stitch. In the center, a crowned French woman places a wreath of flowers on a man's head. A second woman, embodying Peace, dressed in antique style, presents him with an olive branch, a symbol of peace. He wears a blue uniform and the cord of the Holy Spirit. His hand rests on a marshal's baton. He is seated on a cannon barrel, a shield, and surrounded by the flags of France. Perhaps this is the Marquis de Castries (1727 - 1801), Marshal of France in 1783, Minister of the Navy from 1780 to 1787, whose strategy led to victories for the French fleet during the American War of Independence. Reverse: red outline of the cartels. Mounted in engraved and silvered ivory, decorated with doves. The plumes are carved on the theme of Love. H.t. 27.6 cm - H.f. 12.8 cm (restorations) Provenance: label with reference 1842 from the former Henry-René d'Allemagne collection (1863- 1950). FR2207514205-K
