Peace and the Gifts of Heaven, circa 1780 - Lot 91
Peace and the Gifts of Heaven, circa 1780 Folded fan, double sheet of engraved paper enhanced with gouache. In the center, France before her throne, dressed in a blue mantle strewn with golden fleurs-de-lis and lined with ermine, welcomes a messenger of peace offering an olive branch. The people of France on both sides rejoice. On the left, the "Presents of the Earth", with fruit spilled from a cornucopia, sheaves of wheat and vines. On the right, the "Presents of Heaven", with Fame sounding the trumpet and a "Peace" flag amidst cannons and standards. Could this be an evocation of French victories in the American War of Independence? Mute reverse. Wooden mounting, undecorated. H.t. 27.3 cm - H.f. 13 cm (good condition, minor restorations) Provenance: label with reference "1895" from the former Henry-René d'Allemagne collection (1863-1950).
