The false princess of Micomicon comes to... - Lot 79 - Coutau-Bégarie
The false princess of Micomicon comes to pray Don Quixote, Europe, circa 1760 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in the English style and painted with the scene where "The false princess of Micomocon comes to beg Don Quixote to restore her to the throne", from Cervantes' famous novel "Don Quixote". The sides are richly decorated with still lifes of melons, grapes, pears and peaches. Cervantes' work enjoyed considerable success in 18th-century Europe, and inspired the decorative arts, which often found their sources in the works of Coypel. Borrowings from Natoire's work are also visible on this sheet. This fan was probably commissioned. The coordination of the decorations between the leaf and the frame is rarely observed, and is particularly noticeable here. The reverse is painted with a young woman in the countryside, surrounded by large flowers reminiscent of indians. Pierced, engraved and painted ivory mount. Flowers on an ivory thread background frame a cartouche depicting Don Quixote in armor in front of a windmill. The composition is lined with tulle.
