The Queen of Sheba, Europe, circa 1750-1760 - Lot 68
The Queen of Sheba, Europe, circa 1750-1760 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in the English style and painted with gouache. In a vast, rich palace, the Queen of Sheba appears before Solomon seated under a canopy. An altar of flaming love bears witness to their budding romance. Soldiers observe the scene, while servants bustle about. The reverse is illustrated with the famous scene in which Cleopatra throws a pearl of great price into a cup of vinegar to reveal her power to Mark Antony. Beautiful, fine ivory mount, finely cut, pierced, engraved and enhanced in color with Chinese-style scenes, figures, birds and fruit baskets. H.t. 27.6 cm - H.f. 11.5 cm Weight 61 gr FR2307517870-K
