Japanese family, Japan, circa 1880 Broken-type fan in ivory. On one side, the strands are decorated in gilded lacquer with a pond landscape, with irises growing on the shore, and a couple watching a child approach the water. Their heads are carved in thick ivory. The reverse is painted with a wisteria in bloom. The plumes are richly inlaid with a decoration of flowers and a parrot among pomegranates and flowers, and a pheasant among cherry blossoms and bamboo, worked in relief by inlaying hard stones, coral and white mother-of-pearl ("Shibayama").
