Chantecler, France, circa 1910 Lingerie" parasol, white cotton cover with machine-embroidered border. Bamboo cane, finished with a fluted shaft and metal knob with button ending, adorned with a crowing rooster against a background of sunbeams, and the mask of La Comédie. The name "Chanteclair" (sic) in relief refers to Edmond Rostand's play "Chantecler", first performed in Paris in 1910. Trimmings on the handle. Length 97 cm Eight black steel ribs 53 cm, and nickel-plated needles (good condition, wear, traces) THE ANIMAL THEME 1900-1920 Carved pommels in wood, ivory and, more rarely, tortoiseshell, have been very popular since the early 19th century. Their success peaked around 1895-1914. In July 1905, the newspaper "La Mode" wrote: "the novelty of carved and painted animal heads with a hint of caricature: there are monkeys (...) of a comic if not aesthetic aspect, fun to have for anyone with a large number of other fantasies (...)".
