Scarab beetle, Great Britain, circa 1850-1855 A rare and astonishing parasol, its black silk cover adorned with beetle carapaces depicting flowers. The tulle "bavolines" are edged with a two-tone green and ochre silk fringe. Beetle wings were popular in European costume in the 18th and 19th centuries, and again in the early 20th century. A dress embroidered with beetle wings, contemporary with this parasol, is in the collections of Fort William, West Highland Museum (inv. 1993.022). Pole, needles, runner, tip and pommel in turned ivory. Total length 66 cm Steel whalebone, 26 cm Weight 235 gr (restoration, small crack on runner) All umbrellas and parasols containing ivory, whale baleen or rhinoceros horn are issued with an intra-Community certificate, or K permit, allowing them to circulate in Europe. These will be issued to purchasers.
