Men's system umbrella, France, circa 1875 Curiosity and improvement umbrella with black silk and cotton cover. The bamboo shaft ends in a square-shaped, carved horn handle. A push-button releases a curiosity. Coulant bearing the house mark "Charageat Paris London Patent Automaton 22 MARCH 1875", indicating the filing of a patent protecting this invention. A regular prize-winner at the London and Paris World Fairs, E. Charageat is the inventor of the "Automaton" and "Super Automaton" automatic umbrellas, patented in France, England, Austria, Germany, Belgium and America. The "Automaton" or "Super Automaton" is a self-opening, self-closing umbrella. Total length 86 cm Eight steel ribs, 62 cm
