GRIMALDI, Sovereign Prince of MONACO (Albert 1er) [1848-1922 - Lot 267
GRIMALDI, Sovereign Prince of MONACO (Albert 1er) [1848-1922]
On: Renaissance parishioner. P., Gruel et Engelmann, 1883, small in-8 (160 x 110 mm), 632 pages, full havana morocco, muted ribbed spine, 1st plate bearing a large crowned flowered letter in silver, elaborate silver clasps, double gilt fillet on the edges, interior gilt roulette, olive-green moire linings and endpapers, chased gilt edges (signed GRUEL on tail). The leather fastenings of the clasps are missing, the corners are a little dulled, some traces of rubbing of no consequence. The three edges are double-gilt, with roulette and DEO JUVANTE motto on each (Grimaldi motto), and Maltese cross. Beautiful binding by Gruel. The book itself is remarkably illustrated: each page is framed by a different Renaissance border (from page 359), including fine reproductions of originals by Dürer (pages 146 to 213) and other Renaissance masters. Beautiful frontispiece and colophon from the R. Engelmann, dating from 1873. Six full-page hors textes signed by Martin Shongauer (author of the famous Vierge au buisson de roses). Handwritten note "31 octobre 1889 - Don a Rivoli". Victor, Duke of Rivoli, had been the Prince's best man at his wedding the previous day in Paris (October 30, 1889). Through his wife, née Furtado-Heine, he was related to the new Princess of Monaco. A remarkable piece of Gruel and Engelmann's collaboration in a historical copy. This book was the subject of a chapter in "L'âme du bibliophile".
