Corrugated metal button typical of the 1790s, made by Hervé Clérel de Tocqueville and his wife Louise Le Pelletier de Rosanbo. At the start of the Terror, he emigrated to Brussels, but returned to Paris after a month to join King Louis XVI's Constitutional Guard. On March 12, 1793, he married Louise Le Peletier de Rosanbo in Malesherbes, daughter of Louis Le Peletier de Rosanbo and granddaughter of Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, Louis XVI's lawyer. December 17, 1793, Malesherbes and his family are arrested and imprisoned at Port-Royal. Rosanbo was guillotined on April 20, 1794; on the 22nd, Malesherbes, his daughter Mme de Rosanbo, her granddaughter Mme de Chateaubriand and her husband, brother of writer François-René de Chateaubriand. Hervé de Tocqueville, his wife Louise, Mme d'Aunay, his sister-in-law, and Louis de Rosanbo, his brother-in-law, escape the scaffold on the eve of their scheduled execution date, thanks to the fall of Robespierre on 9 Thermidor. Alexis de Tocqueville is their son. The only known French coat-of-arms button from the revolutionary period [I-235].
