GILLES de FONTENAILLES (Countess) - Lot 60
GILLES de FONTENAILLES (Countess) On: Nouvelles Heures Gothiques. D'après les manuscrits des bibliothèques Nationales et particulières, P., (c. 1880), Leroy-Secail, small in-8, 194 pp. illuminated mounted on tabs, full brown chagrin, ribbed spine, cold title, 1st plate bearing an inlaid silver plate with double arms, crown, brackets and motto, double gilt fillet on edges, interior gilt roulette, mauve moire linings and endpapers, gilt edges. A very fine example of a wedding book bearing the arms of Marie Liébert de Nitray and her husband Hercule Gilles, comte de Fontenailles, married on August 1, 1882 in Tours. Count Hercule de Fontenailles was a distinguished composer of music. The couple lived in Paris on avenue Victor. Hugo and the Château de Nitray in Indre-et-Loire. In addition to five full-page chromolithographic illuminations, each page of text is printed in three colors (gothic text in black, prompts in red or blue, two-color lettering, sometimes enhanced with gold. The borders, all different, are exceptional, in three to four colors, enhanced with gold and apparently stencilled. These works, very expensive to produce, were highly prized wedding gifts for the aristocracy. A completely split edge and a slight dent on the second blazon of the plate. Very fine appearance.
