Exceptional 18th-century button of Marshal de Mailly (1707-1 - Lot 23
Exceptional 18th-century button of Marshal de Mailly (1707-1794), married in 1780 to Marie-Blanche-Félicité de Narbonne-Pelet (1763-1840). Given the decorative elements that cannot be worn by a widow, this button dates from 1783, the year in which Augustin-Joseph de Mailly became Marshal of France. It is the only known livery button of an ancien régime marshal of France. Marshal de Mailly was guillotined in 1794 at the age of 87. Louis XVI had given him command of the troops defending the Tuileries on August 10, 1792. In front of the guillotine, the old marshal exclaimed: "Long live the king! I say it like my ancestors. He was: Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis, Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit (Versailles, May 26, 1776), Knight of the Order of Saint-Michel, Knight of the Order of Saint-Lazare [III-2276 corr. VIII].
