Dentelle de Guerre" tablecloth, needlepoint, Belgium, 1st quarter 20th century. Round-shaped tablecloth in fine linen, embroidered in white and in relief with stylized foliage clusters and medallions in needlework, the surround and center with embroidered net and Venise needlework inlays, developing a radiant decor of embroidered clusters alternating with Venise needlework lace inlays, each with the arms of one of the countries allied to Belgium during WW1: USA, Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro. Cream-colored cotton. Diameter: 1.60 m (very good condition) These "Dentelles de Guerre" were produced by Belgian lacemakers during and shortly after the 1st World War as a tribute to these countries and in gratitude to all those who, like Mr. Henry Hoover, future President of the United States, had helped raise funds to help their country, notably by sending them the threads needed to produce lace, which were unavailable at the time.
