Exceptional Valenciennes lace handkerchief with the arms of - Lot 347
Exceptional Valenciennes lace handkerchief with the arms of Belgium and Austria, circa 1880. Most likely made for the wedding of Princess Stephanie of Belgium and Archduke Rudolph of Austria in 1881, this large-framed Valenciennes bobbin lace handkerchief is divided into four well-defined sections by a series of fleurs-de-lys: the arms of Belgium in one corner, the arms of the Austrian Empire in the opposite corner, the other two corners decorated with bouquets and sprays of roses with their buds, tulips, violets and small carnations within their foliage. The motifs are linked by a network of square meshes on finely woven points. Fine ivory linen. Dim. 37 cm x 34 cm (good condition, freckles, one more pronounced on the lace). The quality of the workmanship and the intelligence of the stitches used lend realism and an elegant lightness to the design, perfectly illustrating the quality of Valenciennes lace produced in Belgium during this period.
