Rare large handkerchief in Alençon lace and county crown, ne - Lot 345
Rare large handkerchief in Alençon lace and county crown, needlework, France, circa 1860-80. A very large frame in Alençon stitch with structured decoration of rectangular or drop-shaped cartouches, each adorned with a rosehip flower and its foliage worked in tight, gradated stitches for a lovely volume effect, bouquets bursting out above in lobes cutting through the central linen, the border festooned with a series of medallions punctuated by oblong cartouches. Dark ivory cotton, horsehair around the edges and on the picots of some motifs. Large MR monogram under a Count's crown in needlepoint lace inlaid in a corner of the linen.
