Rare large needle lace stocking, Sedan, circa 1730-40. Circular stocking with no visible seams, featuring remarkable needlework of extreme finesse, with very tightly embroidered motifs in festoon stitch and linked by a network of large, finely picothed meshes. Well-structured decor with large cartouches and draped domes, a series of small cartouches decorated with a variety of stitches and featuring bouquets of peonies and bulbous flowers, including the disheveled tulips that were very fashionable at the time, supple branches of foliage and florets, bouquets supported by superb floral motifs, exotic flowers and large floral motifs on the borders. Dark ivory linen. Dim. 3.40 m x 66 cm (good condition, rare very small stains) Provenance: sale February 3, 1988 at Drouot, study Gros et Delletrez.
