Rare borders, Point de Venise à réseau, circa 1720-30. Extremely fine linen with reliefless motifs, the two borders richly decorated with large exotic flowers in a wide variety of stitches, around which nestle supple palms and various foliage, a simple needlepoint network. One cream-colored, Dim. 39 x 13 cm (upper border cut, discrete restorations, lower border consolidated) the other bleached, Dim. 1.75 m x 6.5 cm (good condition, one motif inlaid, border consolidated). This lace technique, although known as Venise à réseau, was also produced in the Brussels region. Cf. "Lace a History" Mrs. Santina M.
