KOROVINE Constantin Alexéïévitch (1861-1939). Set design for the ballet Salammbô. Oil and gouache on panel mounted on canvas, signed lower right in Cyrillic script "Salambo Konstantin Korovine" preserved in a modern gilded wood frame. Restoration, good condition. Sight: H.: 47.5 cm - W.: 73 cm. Frame: H.: 74.5 cm - W.: 100 cm. Provenance: Christie's sale, London, November 26, 2012, lot n°166. Biography: Constantin Korovin is a Russian painter and decorator. Born in Moscow, he studied at the Moscow School of Fine Arts, then at the Russian Academy of Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. Korovine distinguished himself as a painter of landscapes, urban scenes and portraits. He also won admiration as a decorator for Russian imperial theaters, in particular the Bolshoi Theater. History: Salammbô was reinterpreted as a ballet at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre on January 10, 1910. The ballet is based on Flaubert's novel and highlights the tragic love story of the heroine, whose name gives the work its title. Set in Carthage in 240 B.C., the ballet was choreographed by Alexander Gorsky (1871-1924), with the musical score composed by Andrey Fedorovich Arends (1855-1924) and the sets by Constantin Korovine.
