Biography: From the start of his training, Leonid Tchoupiatoff followed in the footsteps of his master Kouzma Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939). Their joint work had a profound influence on Russian art. As Petrov-Vodkin said in 1926: "Tchoupiatoff's work has greatly contributed to the evolution of painting". He usually worked alone, and tried to ensure that his work was not taken up, influenced or even dictated by the new political regime in place in Russia since the Revolution. In addition to his creative work, from 1919 to 1933 he taught in several large public schools in Novgorod, Kiev and Leningrad. Until 1941, he was also involved in creating ballets and shows for the Leningrad Dramatic Theater, for which he designed all the stage sets and costumes for "The Queen of Spades" in 1935. He and his wife died of starvation a few years later during the blockade of Leningrad in 1941.
Provenance: former collection of Igor Evguenivitch Anitchikoff (1897-1978), the painter's best friend. See in the memoirs written by Dimitri Serguévitch
Likhatchev (1906-1999), where the author evokes the artist and his friend, published in St. Petersburg by Logos in 2001: "The painter Tchoupiatoff and his wife died of starvation. Until his death, he painted. And even when he ran out of canvas, he continued to paint on cardboard. He came from an old Russian aristocratic family and his best friend was Anitchkoff, to whom he bequeathed several major works". A certificate of authentication issued by the Galerie
Tretiakoff Gallery, Moscow, dated July 19, 2002, signed by Mrs. L. I. Gladkova, and Mrs. M. V. Valiaeva, will be given to the buyer.
