History: The Holy Martyrs Antoniy, Ioanne and Evfrosiy are honored by Catholics and Orthodox alike, and are recognized as Lithuania's patron saints. Antoniy and Ioanne were two brothers who served Prince
Olguerd (1296-1377), as did Evfrosiy. They were executed by pagans in 1347, before having their relics transferred to Constantinople and canonized in 1374. Thanks to them, Prince Olguerd (Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1345 to 1377) returned to the Christian faith and embraced monasticism at the end of his life. Prince Olguerd's twelve sons became Christians, and by the end of the
By the end of the 14th century, half the inhabitants of Vilnius were Orthodox. The history of the Orthodox Church in Lithuania is inseparable from that of the Russian Church.
The spiritual link of the Vilnius Martyrs with Holy Russia is attested by the fact that the Patriarch of Constantinople Filofey sent Sergius of Radonezh (1314-1392) a cross containing parts of the relics of the Vilnius Martyrs. From 1915 to 1946, the relics of Lithuania's celestial patrons were kept in Moscow. In 1996, they were flown to Vilnius. The relics of the three Holy Martyrs of Vilnius are now housed in the Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius. The commemorative feast of the Holy
Martyrs is celebrated on April 27. They are also highly venerated in Belarus.
