Bifacial sculpture in patinated terracotta. On one side - Lot 205
Bifacial sculpture in patinated terracotta. On one side Saint Joseph seated, carrying the Infant Jesus on his lap, on the other the Virgin Mary in the same posture. Southern Netherlands, entourage of Michiel Van der Voort (Antwerp 1667 - 1737), early 18th century H. 27.5 cm (minor accidents and visible missing parts) This double-sided terracotta model is truly original. The influence of the great Italian masters of the Baroque period is very much in evidence. However, the peaceful looks and tender expressions indicate that we're in the early days of classicism, which was to modify the canons previously used. Michiel Van der Voort is known for retaining the robustness of Michelangelo's models, which he saw while visiting Italy between 1690 and 1693. He sculpted angels for St. Paul's Church in Antwerp, inspired by those of Bernini for the Ponte San Angelo in Rome. But Michiel Van der Voort also drew inspiration from the more classical François du Quesnoy, who sculpted Madonnas with Greek faces, and children with locks of curly hair like those of du Quesnoy. The sculptures presented here reflect the various sources that enabled Michiel Van der Voort's workshop to welcome and train numerous artists, and to develop the Baroque canons towards 18th-century Antwerp classicism.
