Pair of patinated and gilded bronze candelabras decorated with two putti holding in each arm a cornucopia with foliage and seeds forming a light arm. The wicks are adorned with a frieze of leaves, and the binnacles with laurel leaves and seeds. The children wear a bandolier of vine branches and a gilded bronze crown of foliage. They stand on a rocky mound and a circular ormolu base. Quadrangular white marble pedestals support the ensemble. Louis XVI period Height. Height : 43.5 cm These candelabra, produced in a variety of editions, enjoyed great success in the 18th century. Several pairs can now be found in major public and private collections. These include one from the former Riahi collection, dispersed in November 2000, and another pair from the collections of Leopold I, King of the Belgians, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (probably the work of master gilder Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813)). This model is also closely related to the work of sculptors Louis-Félix de La Rue and Clodion. The objets d'art department of the Musée du Louvre holds a pair of candelabra of a similar model, showing a nude girl sitting on a rock and a child satyr leaning on a stump. Two candelabra identical to these were described in detail in the catalog of the Aubert sale held in Paris on March 2, 1786.
