ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE vers 1830-1840, D'APRÈS HYACINTHE RIGAUD (16 - Lot 63
ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE vers 1830-1840, D'APRÈS HYACINTHE RIGAUD (1659-1743) Portrait of King Louis XIV in coronation dress. Large oval medallion decorated with polychrome enamel painted using the "brush enamel" technique, on a hammered and polished metal background creating a relief and perspective effect, enhanced by foliage scrolls and delicate gold fleur-de-lys. The sword, Holy Spirit collar, crown and royal scepter are set with small cabochons of garnets and semi-precious stones. The set is preserved in its original carved and gilded wood frame. Slight age-related wear, but overall good condition. Sight: H.: 63.5 cm - W.: 51 cm. Frame: H.: 100 cm - W.: 74 cm. History: 1830 marked the arrival of Louis-Philippe to power. He promised a new regime aimed at reconciling the French population, following the succession of political regimes in recent years. One of the main projects of his reign was the restoration of the Château de Versailles and the creation of a national narrative. Our portrait reveals the vogue, at the time, for images associated with the reign of Louis XIV, the absolute monarch par excellence.
