An important console table in wood, finely carved and gilded - Lot 53
An important console table in wood, finely carved and gilded, resting on two large C-shaped heads of fauns crowned with acanthus leaves. The two feet, resting on a griffin, are joined by a brace adorned with a large cartouche surmounted by an antique-style helmet adorned with a phoenix. The carved belt is adorned with a mascaron of grimacing fauns wearing feathers, from which acanthus leaves and leafy foliage emerge. Languedoc red marble top. Regency period Attributed to Bernard Honoré TURREAU, known as Bernard TORO, born in Toulon in 1672 and died in the same town in 1731. Height : 86 cm ; Width : 85.5 cm - Depth : 44.5 cm (gilding, metal reinforcements, repolished marble) Toro produced numerous consoles, doors and various woodwork elements for his Provencal clientele. In 1716, he published a collection of his models and various ornaments, comprising 115 plates engraved on copper with etching or burin by Charles-Nicolas Cochin, François Joullain, etc., published by Dubuisson.
