Large Japanese lacquer cabinet from the Edo period, 17th century, resting on a richly carved, openwork and gilded wooden base. The openwork belt features a large shell centered on a background of leafy crosses and flowers. The cambered uprights, decorated with coiled dragons and staples, rest on small hoofed feet. The rectangular-shaped chest opens with two doors on the front, decorated in hira-maki-e and taka-maki-e in gold lacquer on a black background with two pheasants near a river, the interior opening with ten drawers flanked by handles, the doors decorated in black and gold lacquer with flowers and birds, the hinges and locks in engraved and gilded metal, finely worked.
