D'APRÈS LÉONARD LIMOSIN (1505-1577), Limoges, XIXe siècle - Lot 26
D'APRÈS LÉONARD LIMOSIN (1505-1577), Limoges, XIXe siècle Portrait of Constable Anne de Montmorency (1493- 1567) Polychrome painted enamel with gold highlights in a gilded wood frame with staples, foliage, leather, foliage and two grotesque profiles. Ornamented with eight grisaille-painted enamel plates, four sword-bearing senestrochères surrounded by a phylactery with the connétable's motto, two polychrome-painted enamel masks and an atlantean and caryatid. Monogrammed LL and the date 1556 in the cartouche of the upper right spandrel. Height 80 cm - Width 59 cm (missing) Léonard Limosin is certainly one of the greatest representatives of the Fontainebleau School in the field of enamel painting. Appointed enamel painter and valet de chambre du Roi by Henri II in 1548, he went on to serve François II and Charles IX. The portraits of Anne de Montmorency, Constable of France and Catherine de Médicis, wife of Henri II and regent during the minority of her son Charles IX, represent two of the greatest patrons of enamel painting. The famous portrait of Anne de Montmorency by Limosin in 1556 is in the Musée du Louvre (N°1254). Catherine de Médicis, for her part, was portrayed no less than fourteen times. In all, eighteen of Limosin's portraits, including that of Anne de Montmorency and four of Catherine de Médicis were mounted, as here, in elaborate frames incorporating additional enamel plates. A pair of portraits of Anne de Montmorency and Catherine de Médicis, in frames identical to the present portrait, from the von Oppenheim Trust, was sold at Christie's New York, April 24, 2001, lot 223. A portrait of Anne de Montmorency from the Al Thani collection at the Hôtel Lambert was sold at Sotheby's Paris, October 12, 2022, lot 101.
