Lady's desk in Boulle marquetry of pewter and brass on a tor - Lot 11
Lady's desk in Boulle marquetry of pewter and brass on a tortoiseshell background, opening to a drawer in the waistband and two side pedestals with two drawers. The base has four sheathed feet in ebony and tortoiseshell veneer, adorned with an Ionic capital with flower garlands. Louis XVI period, late 18th century, composed of marquetry panels from the Louis XIV period. Height : 77.5 cm - Width : 107.5 cm - Depth : 59.2 cm (accidents, missing parts, insolate; wear to black leather trim) Our desk is the perfect example of the craze for furniture by André Charles Boulle during the reign of Louis XVI. It was the great seigneurs and other collectors, not the French court, who participated in this craze for Boulle furniture in the second half of the 18th century, collecting originals by the master and his sons, as well as repeats and creations made from antique materials, executed to satisfy connoisseurs, by cabinetmakers such as Etienne Levasseur or Philippe-Claude Montigny. Similar bronze capitals can be found on a circa 1780 desk by Montigny in the Musée du Louvre (OA10469).
