Pair of large medallions in painted polychrome enamel on copper with red ground and gold highlights, depicting the profiles of Renaud and Armide after a watercolor by Paul Soyer; translucent red counter-enamel. Paris, Paul Soyer (1832-1903), circa 1880 D. 15.2 cm In a silver frame. Paul Soyer, the father of a dynasty of enamellers whose technique has never been equaled, exhibited art enamels for furniture, bronze and jewelry at the 1875-1892 Salons. He was awarded the gold medal at the 1878 Universal Exhibition, and collaborated with Claudius Popelin, Charles Duron and Beaugrand, among others. His son Théophile took over the workshop at 4 rue Saint-Sauveur in 1896.
