Rare cricket cage in carved boxwood; hexagonal molded base w - Lot 113
Rare cricket cage in carved boxwood; hexagonal molded base with flattened ball feet; sides with compartments carved with geometrical motifs; shell-shaped St. Jacques lid. shell. Iberian Peninsula, late 16th / early 17th century H. 17 cm -- L. 9.2 cm - Wg. 9.4 cm No other carved boxwood insect cage is known to date. Our cage is inspired by Chinese insect cages in the shape of a lantern. The clerestory carving, however, is European in style, similar to the liturgical combs produced in Flanders. The presence of the scallop shell, however, places production in the era of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, which had trading posts in Asia. This object is therefore the fruit of several cultures coming together, combining the know-how of each to create a unique object.
